Australians are taking up the opportunity to list their fax numbers on the Do Not Call Register with 40,000 fax numbers logged since June this year, according to the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
The Do Not Call Register enables people to list their phone and fax numbers to reduce the number of telemarketing calls or marketing faxes they receive.
As of 31 May this year, the legislation was changed to allow people to register fax numbers. Government and emergency service phone numbers can now also be listed
The ACMA’s Chairman, Chris Chapman, said the register was expanded to include fax numbers so businesses can keep their fax lines from being tied up by unwanted marketing material.
‘The legislation change also has a sustainability element as it reduces the level of office waste created by unwanted marketing faxes,’ Mr Chapman said.
‘There are now more than 5.4 million numbers listed on the register and I encourage Australians to add their fax machine number if they would like to reduce the marketing faxes they receive.
‘Registration is fast, free and easy and should free up your fax machines so you can conduct your daily business more effectively.’ he said.
The ACMA believes there are around 1.2 million fax numbers in use in Australia
