17 Nov : Hindus have applauded Catholics for reviewing and rating films and other entertainment and have stressed that all the world religions should evaluate the entertainment media from a moral perspective before it reaches their respective devotees.
Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that cinema was a powerful medium and it could leave lasting impressions upon the unsuspecting audiences about their value system, especially younger audiences, who are passing through highly impressionable period of their lives. As religious organizations/leaders, it was our duty to guide the faithful from moral perspective and suitability of our respective religions. Our congregations thus can make informed entertainment decisions and choices for themselves and their families for their moral and spiritual development.
Zed, who is the president of Universal Society of Hinduism, says that all religions should be more vigilant to save their devotees from the moral confusion which Hollywood and other entertainment industry creates.
The Office for Film and Broadcasting of United State Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has made the reviews of more than 8,000 movies available, assessing their moral and entertainment values. It also comes up with Ten Best List every year. Even Vatican has complied a Vatican Top 45 List of Best Films. Highest classification given by USCCB is "O—morally offensive". Recent movies which received "O" rating included Role Models, Zack and Miri make a porno, Saw V, Sex Drive, Religulous, Choke, Hounddog, College, Tropic Thunder.
