CHANDIGARH, June 12 : Third seed Vignesh Veerbhadran of Tamil Nadu and lucky loser Aishwarya Aggarwal of Madhya Pradesh claimed the men’s and women’s singles titles, respectively, in the AITA Men and Women Ranking Tennis Tournament organized by the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association at the Sector 10 Tennis Stadium here today.
After splitting the first two sets, Vignesh Veerbhadran just managed to wrap up the match by winning the third and deciding set at 6-4. Vignesh started with flourish by winning the first set at 6-1. However, Shahbaaz put his heart out and clinched the second set at 6-3 to make it one-all. The third set provided all thrills before Vignesh claimed the set and title.
However, in the women’s singles final lucky loser and giant-killer Aishwarya Aggarwal outplayed local girl and qualifier Mehak Singh in a one-sided affair. Serving powerfully and executing her ground strokes with power and precision, Aishwarya won with ease by 6-1, 6-1.
HSIDC player Yogesh Phogat, partnering with Prateek Bhambri of Delhi won the men’s doubled title. The second seeded pair upset top seeded West Bengal pair of Saurav Panja and Manoj Sewa 7-5, 6-4.
. Garima Vatwani (Delhi) and Sowjanya Bavisetti (AP) claimed the women’s doubles title by beating Aishwarya Agarwal (MP) and Natasha Palha (Goa) by 7-5, 6-4.
Chief Operating Officer Gajendra Singh distributed the prizes.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that the CLTA organized the tournament to
to motivate the Chandigarh players to play in both the categories. There were some experienced players namely Saurav Panja and Manoj Sewa who had been good players in 90’s and early 2000 took part in these events. It was a good experience for the new generation to get a chance to play with them.
