CHANDIGARH, DEC 22 : Raiwaly runners were to the fore as they clinched the men’s as well as women’s team trophies in the 48th Natiional Cross Country Championships organized by West Bengal Athletics Association at Jal Paiguri today.
Railways and Services were tied with 27 points apiece for the men’s team championships. However, with their runners finishing better were declared winners and Services have to remain themselves satisfied with the second position. Rajasthan and All India Police Sports Control Board got third and fourth slots with 43 and 78 points.
The Railway runners clinched the first two positions in the individual competitions. Rati Ram Saini covered the 12 km cross country race in 38:15.00. Soji Mathew (Rlys) clocked 38:18.00 for the silver medal. Services runners Gopi T (38:20.00) and Md Yunus (38:31.00) got the third and fourth positions, respectively.
The Railway women got 13 points to be declared champions while Maharashtra were runners-up 29 points. West Bengal got third slot with 51.
Preeja Sridharan of Railways clocked 30:31.00 to earn individual gold medal. Rajput Nilam Sachin of Maharashtra crossed the finish-line in 30:42.00 for individual silver medal.
Uttar Pradesh bagged team trophy for boys under-20 with 14 points. Haryana were awarded 65 points which helped them bag runners-up trophy.
