Prof Sunit Singhi , Head Department of Pediatrics, and Chief, Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care, Advanced Pediatrics Centre, PGI Chandigarh was awarded the Swasth Bharat Samman award by the Hon’able Health Minister Shri Gulam Nabi Azad in a ceremony held in Delhi on the 22 nd Oct 11. The award was bestowed on Prof Singhi for achieving excellence in the field of medical services and for his contribution to the public health care system of India as an initiative by Zee News and LIC to honour committed and outstanding people in the medical profession. The jury consisted of reputed senior medical and non medical professionals including directors of medical Institutions, administrators and social activists. In his academic career of over 30 years, Prof Singhi (MBBS from Rajasthan Univ with Gold Medal, MD from AIIMS ) has contributed to the field of Pediatrics in several ways. He established the first academic Pediatric Intensive Care unit in the country at the PGI to provide state of the art care to critically ill children, and also started the first post doctoral specialization course –DM in this specialty to train doctors in this field. He has conducted over a 100 Pediatric Life Support Training courses and several Intensive care training courses all across the country to train paediatricians in providing immediate life saving care to seriously ill children. He has written more than 300 scientific papers in peer reviewed international and national journals, and textbook chapters and 4 books , and has won numerous prestigious awards and medals for his work. . He is a highly sought after speaker and has delivered more than 250 invited talks at International and National conferences.
He is a Fellow of American college of Critical Care, FCCM; National Academy of Medical Sciences, FAMS; Indian Academy of Pediatrics, FIAP; and Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine, FISCCM. And has been awarded CLARIS ORATION of Indian Society of Critical care Medicine, 2003, GOLD MEDAL of National Neonatology Forum 1993,SS MANCHANDA GOLD MEDAL of IAP 1976, and many orations and best paper prizes
He is a Vice-president of Indian Society of Critical care, and represents Asia on the Executive Council and Board of Governors of World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care. He also and serves as an Associate Editor of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (the official Journal of the World Federation), and a Section Editor of Roger’s Textbook of PIC.
