Chandigarh : Prof. B. D. Radotra of the Department of Histopathology, PGI was elected unopposed as President of the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists (IAPM) at the 60th Annual Conference of the Association held at Patiala. The honour was bestowed on him in view of his yeoman’s service to the Association. He has earlier served as Honorary Secretary (2002-2005) and Vice-President (2007) of this Association. Dr Radotra took charge of his new role on 4th December 2011.
IAPM is a professional organization of more than 3200 Pathologists and Microbiologists whose objective is promotion, advancement and dissipation of knowledge in this specialty. It acts as an expert technical body to express its views on matters such as education, training, professional practice and quality control. IAPM provides a forum for presentation and publication of research activities by way of conferences and its journals. It is affiliated to the International Academy of Pathology (IAP) as its Indian Division.
Dr. Radotra joined PGI Faculty in 1987 after finishing his MD in 1984. He was awarded Commonwealth Scholarship in 1992 where he obtained his PhD from the UK on the subject of brain tumours. Recently, he had another opportunity to work for 2 years in Department of Cellular and Molecular Neurosciences and UK National Brain Banks, at the prestigious Imperial College of London and Hammersmith Hospital. He has published more than 230 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. He holds Fellowship of many Professional bodies including British Neuropathological Society.
According to Dr. Radotra, young doctors should be encouraged to take up Pathology as a challenging profession. The increasing manpower in this field would automatically restrict mushrooming of labs run by unqualified people. Accreditation of labs is a must to deliver a higher quality of services for the Indian people even in rural areas. An accurate diagnosis of ever increasing cancer patients is paramount to institute an adequate and correct treatment.
Prof Radotra plans to standardize and improve the quality of training to Pathologists and encourage super specialization where national institutes like PGI and AIIMS can take lead. This will not only increase the specialized staff but also provide parallel support and services to the ever growing clinical specialties. As the new President of IAPM Dr. Radotra intends to submit such recommendations to the Government of India and MCI.
