Chandigarh, May 9 – PGIMS, Rohtak has been selected to be one of the new Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) centers on Reproductive Health for conducting clinical, operational and action oriented research in the areas of national priority.
This was announced by the Director General Indian Council of Medical Research and Secretary, Department of Health Research, Government of India Dr. V.M. Katoch. He said that in this Centre Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Community Medicine would jointly come together to form a field unit however research inputs from other departments would also be taken into consideration. The centre could submit research proposals to ICMR for grant-in-aid projects in priority areas of research of national, regional and state relevance. This would be the first ICMR centre in PGIMS.
Vice Chancellor, University of Health Sciences PGIMS Dr. S.S. Sangwan said that establishment of this centre would boost research in the areas of Reproductive Health in the Institution. The centre would work in coordination with state health functionaries. The centre would be actively involved in cultivation of new knowledge and better and efficient delivery of health care to the people of state of Haryana. Networked with other ICMR centers on Human Reproduction, centre would be involved in generation of new research ideas which would eventually be helpful in generation of Research projects. A substantial support from ICMR would be received and the activities of the Centre would be monitored by an apex ICMR committee.
Director, PGIMS Dr. C.S Dhull said that it was a milestone in the history of PGIMS as an ICMR Centre was being established in the institution. Reproductive health broadly deals both men and women during and beyond the reproductive years, reproductive processes, functions and systems, maternal and child health, infertility, sexually transmitted diseases, psycho-sexual health, safe motherhood and pregnancy, management of obstetric complications and family planning measures. He said the ICMR centre would be an active and dynamic unit for conducting specific research in these areas.
