Chandigarh : Diabetes mellitus is most common cause of non communicable disease. India has dubious distinction to be world capital of diabetes. Currently, India has 5 Crore patients of diabetes, by 2030 number will increase to 8 Crores. Unfortunately, prevalence of diabetes is increasing in young population. Diabetes mellitus is more common in affluent population and its treatment is associated with high cost and loss of working hours. Prevalence diabetes in Chandigarh is ranging between 10-12 %. Every week department of endocrinology PGIMER, sees around 1000-1200 patients of diabetes mellitus. Out of these 10% are new patients. Diabetes mellitus patients having various complication like involvement of eyes, kidney and foot. Every year world diabetes day is celebrated on 14th November, to increase awareness about diabetes. This year the slogan for this occasion is Secure the future by preventing complications of diabetes.
Department of Endocrinology, PGIMER, Chandigarh is organisingMarathon/Walkathon on 18th November (Sunday) at Sukhna Lake. The events will start at 8.00 am from police post of Sukhna Lake and will go up to Rock Garden and will return from there and reach back to police post of Sukhna lake. This event is organised to increase awareness about diabetes among general population on the occassion of World diabetes day. All citizens are invited to participate in this event, The event will addressed by individuals suffering from Type 1 diabetes and organizing team (Dr Anil Bhansali and Dr Sanjay Bhadada). Individuals with type 1 diabetes will share their experience and organizing team provides information about how to prevent diabetes and its complications. The event will be inaugurated by Mr Rajpal Singh (ex captain Indian hockey team) and madam Kamal Thakur Singh (ex international, badminton champion) in addition to this during this event facilities for blood glucose testing, diabetes education about diet and diabetic diet also available, event will be over by 10 am.
