Chandigarh : On 20 December, 2012, at 3 PM, in Auditorium of Advanced Pediatrics Centre of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Chandigarh, a public lecture-interaction on the ‘common problems in new-born babies’ will be conducted by Dr Shiv Sajan Saini, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Neonatology) under the guidance of Prof Praveen Kumar (Head, New-born unit) and Prof Sunit Singhi (Head, Pediatrics Department). This lecture will be another one of the series of events planned in celebration of Golden Jubilee year of PGIMER, Chandigarh.
The lecture will deal with the common problems of new born babies in first few days and weeks of life. The birth of the new-born baby is a moment of great joy for the family. At the same time, it creates the greatest anxieties for the family as the babies have very limited ways of expression. The new-born baby, in the process of growth and development is bound to show a spectrum of variations. There can be variations in growth, behaviour, activity, feeding, sleep, stooling, urine etc. The parents have to recognize the ‘normal’ to pick up abnormality. Parenting is instinctive but parent- craft has to be learnt. With the rise of nuclear families, the shared ‘experience’ of grandparents is not readily available for the young parents. Parents also need to learn the routine care needs of the babies –about feeding, clothing, bathing and so many other things. This one hour session is aimed towards parents and families to help them take care of their baby confidently understand the normal variations in the new-born baby as well as recognize the danger symptoms and clues when they should seek medical help.
