16 Nov : The government is planning to launch a National Organ Transplant Programme to encourage and facilitate major transplantations like kidney, liver and heart.
This was announced by the Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, at an organ donors function in Chennai on Sunday.
The programme is estimated to cost between 1200 to 1400 crore rupees. He said the proposed national plan will lay emphasis on promoting cadaver donation.
Under the programme, a network will be set up to ensure equitable distribution of retrieved deceased organs.The networking will also help in making available organs for transplantation.
The Health Minister said, as an incentive the government will provide free second class railway passes and free life insurance for the immediate relative of the donor.
