28 August :Attention of Government has been drawn to a matter concerning the award of Dronacharya Award for Boxing to Shri Jagdish Singh. It is noteworthy that nominations for Arjuna, Dronacharya and other Sports awards are received from National Sports Federations, Indian Olympic Association, State Governments and Sports Control Boards.
2. These recommendations are submitted to an independent Selection Committee consisting of eminent sportspersons, including Olympians and past Dronacharya Awardees, and sports administrators. As per the Scheme of Grant of Awards, the Selection Committee is the final authority which selects the awardees.
3. Shri Jagdish Singh was unanimously selected by the Committee for the Dronacharya Award for Boxing. However, after his selection, Government received a representation in which it was alleged that there was a case registered against Shri Jagdish Singh under Section 302 & 120-B of IPC. It was requested that in view of this an enquiry may be conducted with this matter. Immediately on receipt of this communication, the matter was examined in the Ministry at highest level and a decision was taken to ask the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to enquire into the matter, as the coach concerned is a SAI coach. SAI was also directed to contact the Senior Superintendent of Police of Bhiwani and ascertain the current status of the matter. After examining the matter in detail and consultation with the Senior Superintendent of Police of Bhiwani, SAI have indicated that there is no case pending against Shri Jagdish Singh, Boxing Coach and that he is not an accused in the matter connected with the unfortunate death of a trainee in SAI Training Centre, Bhiwani. A Challan has already been filed in the court against the accused. The concerned police authorities have not filed any charges against Shri Jagdish Singh, Boxing Coach.
