Dr.S.M.Bose , former Senior Prof. and Head of Surgery of PGI, Chandigarh was honoured with Prof. S.S.Anand Oration Award during the 70th National Conference of Association of Surgeons of India being held in AIIMS, New Delhi . The conference is being attended by more than 6000 Surgeons from all over India and abroad.
Prof. Bose delivered the Endowment lecture in memory of his teacher
and trainer Prof.Anand, the founder Director of PGI, Chandigarh.
He delivered a very topical, relevant and ethical lecture on “ Disappearing Art of Clinical Practice”. He said that the modern day doctors do not examine the patients at all, they depend solely upon costly and irrelevant investigations not only for diagnosis but for management also. He presented about 10 cases, four of them being NRIs, where sophisticated and costly investigations in the absence of proper clinical examinations had mislead the treating surgeons. Dr.Bose advised the young surgeons to undertake thorough clinical examination before starting treatment. He was of the opinion that complete diagnosis could be reached in 70% of cases with the help of
examination only. Good bed side manners, communication skills, humility and sympathetic attitude should also become integral characteristics of surgeons.
