Barinder Saluja, Chandigarh,March 10 : Dr SK Jindal, Prof. & Head, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, PGIMER Chandigarh, who was recently selected for the international award as the Outstanding Educator (2011) by the American Thoracic Society, has been now honoured as one of the five distinguished experts of International Advisory Board of the famous 8-volume, 13-book Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations(Respiratory), popularly known as “the green book”. The Netter Collection exemplifies the distinct perspectives of Dr Frank H. Netter as a doctor, artist and teacher. He started with medical paintings during his graduation in medicine, completed his internship and surgical residency at Bellevue Hospital , New York , and published the first collection in 1948. Since then, his paintings depicting human anatomy and pathological states, have received wide acclaim the world over.Dr Netter’s collective works are monumental, legendary and continuously growing. His illustrations remain the most frequently used pictures by medical doctors and teachers for their lectures and other purposes. The 3rd volume published in 2011, is the most recent update of the Netter’s timeless work by the master artist-physician, Carlos Machado.
Dr Jindal’s advice has specifically pertained to suggestions and remarks on paintings on lung diseases which are more common in the developing countries. This is done for purposes of accuracy, simplicity and easy interpretability of illustrations. In this context, Dr Jindal informs that people in the West in the past had looked into the spectrum of medical problems of the developing countries from their own view points. This had frequently resulted in overlooking some and putting undue emphasis on other problems. Advice
on such issues by experts from these countries helps in providing a correct perspective for the subsequent practices and formulation of policies.
