Dr. B.R. Mittal, Prof. & Head of Nuclear Medicine & PET at the PGIMER, Chandigarh has been conferred with the Homi Bhabha Memorial Oration Award during the 45th Annual Conference of Society of Nuclear Medicine, India held at Mumbai from 12-15 December 2013.This is the most prestigious award by the society started in 1970 in the memory of Homi Jehangir Bhabha, a great Indian scientist who played a major role in the development of the Indian atomic energy program and is considered to be the father of India’s nuclear program. First Homi Bhabha Memorial Oration was awarded in 1970 to Dr. Vikram Sarabhai who succeeded Dr. Bhabha as the chairman of Indian atomic energy commission. Later this oration has been awarded to distinguished doctors/scientists like Dr. V Ramalingaswami, Dr. Raja Ramanna, Dr. Anil Kakodkar. This honor has been conferred to Dr. Mittal for his dedicated career and contribution to clinical Nuclear Medicine practice, teaching & training.
Dr. Mittal is the first person to earn MD degree in Nuclear medicine in India. He is also the fellow of National academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS), Indian College of Nuclear Medicine (FICNM) and International Union against cancer (FUICC). He also underwent PET fellowship in USA and Australia. He has more than 300 publications to his credit in various International and National peer reviewed journals of repute. Dr. Mittal had also served as the President of Society of Nuclear Medicine, India. He has also been appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of Indian Journal of Nuclear Medicine, a peer reviewed pubmed indexed journal.
