A breast feeding awareness camp was organized at Colony No. 5 Chandigarh as part of Breast Feeding week on 6 August 2011 by School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh. Around 70 lactating & antenatal mothers and 17 Anganwadi workers from various Anganwadi Centres of Colony No. 5 attended the camp. Dr Suraj Senjam Senior Resident, School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh highlighted the benefits of breast feeding. He explained the breast feeding should be initiated within one hour of delivery and health benefit of colostrum as well as exclusive breast feeding till 6 months of age. He also shared with audiences the role of breast feeding in the growth and IQ development and bonding between mother and infant. He said the longer the continuition of breast feeding better the benefit. Dr. Rashmi Junior Resident from same deptt gave a talk on technique on breast feeding. She explained about supplementary feeding and what to be feed. How it has to be feed. She discouraged bottle feeding to the audiences. Dr. Suraj repeatedly said about the time in which utmost precaution needs to be taken i.e. durng weaning period and teething stage. In this period children are likely to catch with diseases like diarrhea, other GI infections. The camp was concluded with good response from participants and distribution of refreshment.
