Dr. Avnish Jolly, CHANDIGARH– June 26:Centre for Adult, Continuing Education & Extension, Panjab University, Chandigarh (CACEE) celebrated International Drug Abuse Day at House No. 573, Milk Colony, Dhanas with an objective to train the parents and adolescents about the harmful effects of drugs in their day to day life. Forty Parents and adolescents attended the panel discussion.
Mrs. Renu Gandhi, Programme In-charge, CACEE expressed a deep concern about the use of drugs among adolescents which not only effect their physical and mental growth but also isolate them from the society which is not curable at later stage. She discussed that drugs abuse among adolescents are due to peer pressure. First it becomes a fashion then it becomes a habit and the third stage is necessity. It is therefore necessary to guide the parents how they could make their wards sensitive towards drug abuse. So that it
will not effect their physical growth and social life at later stage.
Prof. Kiranpreet Kaur, Dept. of Sociology emphasized that the parents are to be guided about the problems of drug addictions among adolescents. Adolescents need affection and care. Competition and aggressive behavior of the parents compel them to come under peer pressure.
Mrs. Meena Nodel Prerak from Female Literacy House expressed that there is a need to guide the parents about drug abuse and awareness campaign would go a long way to control the drug abuse among adolescents.
