The Advanced Eye Centre, PGIMER is celebrating its 6th Founders Day on 18th March, 2012. On this occasion, a Continuing Medical Education Programme is being organized in the Centre. Prof. Yogesh Chawla, Director, PGI, will inaugurate the CME on 10.30am. Prof P Namperumalsamy, Madurai will deliver the 6th Founders’ Day Lecture and Dr Ragini Parikh will deliver the N D Lakhanpal Memorial Lecture. The Continuing Medical Education programme will also include eminent speakers like Dr T P Lahane, Mumbai, Dr Atul Kumar, Dr Tanuj Dada, Dr Vimla Menon, Dr B P Guliani, Dr Anita Sethi (all from Delhi), Dr SPS Grewal, Dr Rajiv Gupta, Dr Kanwar Moha, Dr Ashok Kumar from Chandigarh.
Achievements of Eye Centre so far: The Advanced Eye Centre was inaugurated on 18.3.2006 by the then Vice President Hon’ble Sh Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in the presence of the then Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss. The Eye Centre was set up with the objective of providing high quality tertiary eye care to the patients from the entire North West India. Till the setting up of this Centre, no such advanced facility existed in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
Ever since, the Eye Centre was set up, it has continued to make great strides in providing high quality care to the patients of the region that can match with the best available services in the world. During this time more than 1 million patients (10,47,120) have been treated. Out of this almost 7 lac patients have been treated in the various special clinics/services of the centre namely Uveitis, Retina, Cornea, Glaucoma, Lens, Squint etc. The Centre is well known for providing world-class treatment to patients coming for Retinal diseases. Nearly 2,43,661 patients availed off the services of the Retina Clinic. The Centre pioneered the use of OCT in India and in the last 6 years nearly 47,000 OCT examinations were carried out besides performing almost 75,000 Fundus Angiography & Imaging studies. During this period 28,000 laser photocoagulation procedures for retinal disorders were done. The glaucoma clinic registered nearly 21,000 patients with online availability of database. In the last 6 years 120,927 patients were recorded in the glaucoma clinic. Ever since the Centre came up nearly 35,000 major surgeries have been performed including 613 corneal grafts. The centre also runs a very busy refractive surgery service, which uses the finest technology available to correct refractive errors. 647 femto second laser assisted excimer laser (Lasik) procedures were done in the last 2 years. Further, the department faculty also came up with 142 indexed publications in the various National and International Peer reviewed journals. Recently, the Advanced Eye Centre was awarded the Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India in which the department will establish 3 state of the art laboratories and 5 project will simultaneously run under this programme. Since, 2006, the department has completed 3 ICMR and 1 DST Project. At present, 2 ICMR and 2 DBT projects are under progress. During this time, several faculty members of the department won various National & International awards & orations.
