Chandigarh : Concluding day of the 13th Annual National Conference of Psychiatry a meet between the Representatives of manufacturer of medicines like Sun Pharma, Intas, Alkem, Torrent and Serdia who are involved in research and manufacturing of medicines has been organised to discuss Pharma Interface-Public perception of the industry and Professional relationship.Dr.Abhay Matkar & Dr.Rajeev Jain chaired the meeting. Psychiatrist attending the Conference stressed upon the manufacturer of medicines to cut down the cost of medicines, so that benefits of medicines can reach to maximum patients in India. The representatives of Manufactures intimated that now a days medicines used for treatment of psychiatric disorders used in developed countries like USA are also available in Indian market at much cheaper cost.
Dr.Chittaranjan Andrade a stalwart of psychopharmacology in India with international recognition delivered his talk on Psychopharmacology of schizophrenia “Past, Present, but no future”. He stated schizophrenia is a psychotic mental disorder in which patient has disturbance in thinking, mood and behaviour. Patients usually shows blunt affect of bizarre behaviour. Usually such patients don’t have insight; they never believe they are sick and suffering from psychotic mental disorders. Now a day’s effective medicine for the treatment of schizophrenia are available.1% of the population across world is suffered by schizophrenia
Dr.Rajiv Gupta, President Indian association of Private Psychiatry North Zone from Ludhiana shared his experience in dealing patients having addiction of drugs in Punjab. He stated that Drug addiction has come in a big way in Punjab. There is hardly any segment of the population in the state which has been spared by this menace. Every school going child has heard the words like bhuki, afeem, smack, lomotil tab, heroin, blue capsules, corex, the most commonly used drugs in the state. It is estimated that about 60-70 percent of the village population is exposed to the drugs. Visit any village area in the state you will find weak, emaciated looking young boys purposelessly moving around on bikes. They appear slow, drowsy and appeared dazed under the effects of the drugs. Most of the applicants for Indian army jobs do not come up to the minimum standards of the defense forces.
New trends; many new drug users directly start from the hard drugs like heroin and children of less than 15-16 years of age start with hard drugs . Many heroin addicts spend 1.05 lacs to 2 lacs a month to have their monthly supply if the drugs. They are resorting to all kind of crime to maintain drug habits. Now female drug addicts using sulfa and smack are being brought for treatment.
While discussing about increasing incidents of Eve teasing in the society these days Dr.Rajiv Trehan a practising Psychiatrist from Panchkula stated that Eve teasing is a sort of sexual aggression or a badly modified form of flirting. It is a sadistic type of behaviour. For some females the trauma of eve teasing is almost equivalent to a mini rape which leads to depression and suicide. It is an offence which should be punishable. The boys who adopt this behaviour are those who are addicts or antisocial personalities. Another group of boys who don’t have girl friends and at the same time are felling frustrated generally adopt this behavior.The boys who have sisters in their homes generally don’t adopt this behaviour.
Prof. (Dr.) S.S.Gill, Vice Chancellor Baba Farid University, Punjab was the Chief Guest in the Valedictory function. While addressing the delegates the he said Psychiatric disorder & addiction of drugs in Punjab is like Viral Fever. Where as numbers of patients are increasing every day, but number of psychiatrist available to treat them are significantly less. He appreciated the role of Indian Association of Private Psychiatry who are catering three fourth patients of Psychiatric disorders across India. He further suggested organising such academic activities in small towns & cities and also includes General Physicians in such conferences.
Dr.Rajesh Nagpal from Delhi is elected as National President of Indian Association of Private Psychiatry for next 2 years.
