Chandigarh, June 3, 2009 : A massive blood clot was successfully removed from a 105 years old lady, who was suffering from diabities at Ivy Hospital. This unique success was achieved by a team of doctors led by Dr Gaurav Singal, Senior Consultant Vascular Surgeon, Ivy Hospital.Dr Gaurav Singal said, “Mrs Suman Shardha from Mohali, a chronic patient of Diabetes and Hypertension, came with massive swelling in her lower limb. She was diagnosed to be having acute DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). Urgent Surgery was planned. Massive Blood clot was removed from her major veins by giving a small cut in her right leg. A temporary A-V fistula to prevent reclotting of blood was constructed.”
Dr Gaurav further said that he learnt this technique in Germany. He is the only surgeon doing this kind of surgery with excellent results in the country. Vascular bypass operation in the leg preceded Heart Bypass operations much before.
Dr Kanwal Deep, Medical Director, Ivy Hospital said, “India alone has a population of more than 40 millions as diabetics. About 1000 per million people will develop advanced ischaemia, which is generally means an impending amputation if no vascular surgical procedure is contemplated. These chance of a diabetic losing a limb due to compromised blood flow is quite high. On an average a diabetic who has already lost one of his legs the chances of losing the other leg is 50% in the next 5 years. These patient need proper vascular care so as to halt the progression of the disease.”
