The World Chess Federation (FIDE) has conferred the title of Women FIDE Master (WFM) on Chandigarh’s 10-year old chess prodigy Tarini Goyal. This Class V student of Sacred Heart Convent School, who is also the U-9 National Champion, has been awarded the WFM title for her outstanding performance in the Asian Youth Chess Championship held in Philippines in May this year.
She had bagged two Team Gold Medals and two individual Silver Medals in the Championship, which was the highest possible number of medals that an individual could bag in the Championship.
Tarini, who started playing chess at the age of six, has been consistently performing well in the Asian and National Championships. Besides the National title in the Under-9 Girls category, Tarini’s medal tally in the Asian Youth Chess Championships now stands at seven. She was awarded the title of Women Candidate Master by FIDE in 2009 and her current FIDE Rating is 1641.
Vipnesh Bhardwaj, Hony Secy. Chandigarh Chess Association, has congratulated Tarini for bagging the WFM Title. Definitely, this is a great inspiration for the budding chess players of the city, he added.
Tarini’s coach, G B Joshi is all praise for her deep understanding of the game and her patience. Joshi, a nationally renowned coach, who has worked with a number of successful Indian chess players, added that Tarini has the right temperament for the game, which would surely help her achieve greater heights at international levels.
