By : Navneet Singh,Sports Editor , New Delhi : Australia’s former great track runner Cathy Freeman and cricket legend Allan Border will be brand ambassador for the Delhi half marathon to be held on November 1. This was announced here Thursday evening by the organiser—Procam International.
Freeman, the first aborigine athlete to have represented Australia in the global track and field meets, was at the peak of her career during the Sydney games in 2000. She set the track ablaze in front of the home crowd to win title in the women 400 meters race.
Border, the famous Aussies skipper, whose name is etched in the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, will be seen in a different role on the occasion of the prestigious event that is among the richest half-marathon in the country.
The organisers also announced start of online registration for the race which will end in the second week of October.
The race is open to both Indian and foreign athletes. Runners from East African countries–Kenya and Ethiopia have dominated the event in the past, winning all top ten positions. According to the organiers, this is year, the scenario is likely to be same–Kenyans or Ethiopian—taking home the top prize money.
In the Indian category, the race is generally dominated by the athletes from Services.
