CHANDIGARH, AUG 13 : Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26 defeated Carmel Convent, Sector 9 by 2-1 in a thrilling final of the Chandigarh Junior Girls Football Championship for Dr. Kamesh Bhargava Memorial Trophy at St. Stephen’s School ground in Sector 45 here today
Both teams dished out good soccer and showed good fighting spirit . The Sacred Heart girls team had three international players Saumiya, Ivy Raina and Anika in their line-up . Similarly , Carmel team had two international players Sharika Kaul and Jaspreet Kaurn their ranks i. These girls had represented Indian teams in AFC tournaments at sub junior and junior level.
The Carmel Convent girls were first to make an attack from the kick off but failed at the crucial moment . The ball was moving from one side to other as both wanted to take lead as early as possible . The Camrel girls were on attack but failed to break the tight defence manned by stopper Hasrat Sandhu of Sacred heart team till first 20 minutes .
However , the Carmel players were awarded direct kick from top of the dangerous area. International Sharika Kaul took a powerful shot which went into the goal beating the rival goalkeeper completely and scored first goal for her team in the 21 minute. Stung by this reverse Sacred Heart girls tried hard to equalize but failed . Carmel were leading by 1-0 goal in first half .
After the lemon break ,Sacred Heart girls were a changed lot were playing coordinated game . International Saumiya dribbled past two defenders and gave a through pass to Anika whose first time shot went into goal by beating the Carmel goalkeeper and equalized for Sacred Heart in the 34th minute.
Elevated by this goal Sacred Heart girls were on attack. At this time rain had started which continued for some time . Sacred Heart girls scored seond goal in 44th minute when their speedy left winger Ivy Raina collected a stray and rushed towards carmel goal and took a powerful shot which touched the Carmel goalkeepers hands and went into the goal .
The Carmel girls tried hard to equalize but in vain.
