Pune: Host’s Maharashtra shuttlers finished on top by achieving a grand quadruple in the team event of the 57th National Schools Badminton Championship, at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Mhalunge-Balewadi, here on Wednesday.
On the second day of the championship, the hosts made the day memorable landing titles in the Under-19 and Under-17 boys and girls sections respectively. All titles were claimed with relatively easy 2-0 scorelines, barring the Under-19 girls section.
Likewise, the hosts managed two third place finishes with the Under-14 boys and girls winning their play-off matches against Chhatisgadh and West Bengal by identical 2-1 results.
In the Under-19 boys final Maharashtra fought off Haryana 2-0. Sudhanshu Medsikar won a tough encounter against Ketan Chehel 21-15, 12-21, 21-19 to put the hosts I the advantage before Abhishekh Kulkarni and Shlok Ramchandran beat the opponents duo Ketan/ Ashish Rathi 21-7, 21-7.
The distaff section, Maharashtra had to sweat before getting the better of Delhi 2-1 with Kalyani Limaye giving the hosts the lead and then Riya Pillai turning out to be the tie hero defeating Rajani 21-8, 21-8 in the deciding singles.
On the other hand, the Under-17 state boys rode on Kaushal Dharmamer’s heroics in the singles and doubles to get past Karnataka 2-0, while in the corresponding girls section the state put out Gujarat 2-0 with Revati Devasthale beating Anushka Parikh 21-17, 21-16 and then Lalita Katre and Swatika Bhute knocking out Anushka/ Rahi Doshi 21-18, 21-19.
