BATHINDA, Oct.13 :Jalandhar emerged the overall champions by bagging 36 points in Punjab State Games for Women which concluded at the Sports Stadium here today. Amritsar were runners-up with 22 points while the third place was baggedby Patiala with 10 points.
Member Parliament and president of Punjab Olympic Association Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa was the chief guest and distributed the prizes. Principal Secretary Department of Sports & Youth Services, Punjab R P S Powar welcomed the chief guest. Padma Shree Pargat Singh, Director Sports, Punjab thanked the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion Olympian Pargat Singh said that the Punjab teams for the coming National Women Games would be selected during these games. The selected players would attend coaching camps before participating in the nationals.
Member Parliament Paramjit Kaur Gulshan, who could not attend the function, has announced a grant of Rs five lakh from the MP’s fund to establish an state-of-art shooting range as a number of shooters from this region have excelled. Commonwealth Games medalist Aveneet is one of the product of this area. Fifty per cent of the grant was handed over today and the remaining will be given as soon as construction work on shooting range starts.
Earlier Jalandhar shuttlers added one more feather in their cap by winning gold as they outplayed second seed Patiala in straight games 2-0 in the finals at Civil Lines Club.
In hockey Amritsar eked out a narrow 1-0 win over Kapurthala in a closely contested final. The all-important goal was scored by Kirandeep who converted a penalty corner in 28th minute. In a classification match for third and fourth places, Jalandhar defeated Bathinda by 5-3 via tie-breaker.
