30 Nov : The 17th Punjab Open Ladies Amateur Golf Championship is being held at the Chandigarh Golf Club from December 1st to 3rd, 2009.
The Punjab Open Ladies Amateur Golf Championship is an IGULS Categorized annual event. Lady golfers from all parts of the Country will take part in this 3 day tournament. There is large-scale media coverage and publicity given by the press and television to this Tournament and its Sponsors.
77 ladies between the ages of 10 to 74 will be vying for the title. The senior-most participant is Pali Sukarchakia and the youngest, little Kainaat Singh.
We have great expectations, this year, from our young and budding golfers. Gauri Monga of Noida, defending Champion & winner of the just concluded Western India Open held in Pune, Gurbani Singh of Delhi, winner of the N. India Open, Akriti Singh of Amritsar and Rabiya Gill of Chandigarh Golf Club (Chandigarh) are amongst the favourites.
This year, we can boast of having the largest number of participants ever in a Punjab Open and also of having the largest ever number of participants in the Super-Senior Category (Age group 65 and above).
From this year onwards, the Junior Division is divided into four Categories:
Category A: 15 – 17 yrs [Handicap 12 & below] (Should not have reached
her18th birthday on the last day of the Championship)
Category B: 13 – 14 yrs [Handicap 12 index 10.3 & below] (Should not have
reached her 15th birthday on the last day of the
Championship)
Category C: 11 – 12 yrs [Handicap 24 index 20.7 & below] (Should not have
reached her 13th birthday on the last day of the
Championship)
Category D: 10 yrs and under [Handicap 30 index 25.8 & below] (Should
not have reached her 11th birthday on the last day of
the Championship).
I must make a mention here about the lukewarm response one gets from Sponsors when it comes to extending support to Women’s tournaments. However, I must thank Markfed, Milkfed, Kingfisher (United Breweries), Punjab Golf Association (PGA), Headmasters, Shoe Rack, Signature (United Spirits), Nestle and Spicy Treat for their contributions towards our gift hampers.
Mr. K S Phoolka has been kind enough to contribute blankets for caddies.
Registration for the Tournament will begin at 9 am on Monday the 30th of November. This will be followed by the Practice Round. The Rules Clinic will take place at 12 noon. The Tournament will be declared “OPEN” with the Ceremonial Tee-Off by Mr. B.S. Gill, President of the Chandigarh Golf Club.
