By Sargun Makhni ,Chandigarh,SD College,BA-1,28th August, 2008 :I want to see this world! , I want to become your shadow!I want my hand should touch yours!
Just I want is you ‘My Mother’
Don’t kill me please! Save me Mother!
I have wings and I want to fly. I have dreams and I want to fulfill them. Please don’t kill me. Against all these huge painful cries even today people are killing the girl child. She is regarded as a burden on the family. The alarming drop in the sex ratio in the society is hence a serious deformity which if not corrected now will become a cancerous latter on. In spite of the fact that the women are excelling in all the fields there existence is threaten by a skewed vision of our society. But what are the reasons? Is it social, Economic, Religious, or psychological? The answer to this question is hard to find.
According to 2001 census the overall rate in India was 947 per thousands boys. A steady decline 947 girls per thousands boys in 1991, latter 962 girls per thousands boys in 1981 was seen. As a result of abortions and killings 5 million girls have disappeared from India every year.
The government display images of little girls with messages like “I am yours don’t kill me”! The government report said that sex ratio was most equal among Christian and Muslims Indians and most tilted was in favor of boys among the Hindus and Sikhs. Muslims and Sikhs follow this strictly and are against female feticide. Though female feticide is banned in Sikhs yet it exists in Sikhs. A son is an extra pair of hands for earning income where as a girl who needs a dowry is considered to be a dark block in parent’s fortune that has to be kept fed and married a weight which is long way to be carried. Growing a girl an Indian magazine says is like watering a neighbor’s garden.
Desire for boys transcends caste, social, educational and economic status. Even in the holy books mother comes before the father so being a girl it is my humble request please let her live! She is the creator, partner, a guide, a friend everything. Let her breathe!
