Shani is one of the nine planets worshipped by Hindus. The birth of Lord Shani is being celebrated all over India today, according to believers in astrology who say it is important to ward off any malefic influence in a person’s horoscope. Shani Jayanti celebration is marked by offering of oil etc to the Shrine and conducting other ways of worship like performing of aarti and puja . Devotee performed Shani yagya or homa is conducted on this day by those people who have the Saturn cycle or Sani cycle or Sade sathi in their horoscope. Many believe that Saturn cycle can be a reason for the bad patch in their life. Pacifying Sani or obtaining Shani shanti is the desired result from such pujas.
In Hinduism, Lord Shani is the son of Surya (Sun God) and his wife Chaya. He is also the god worshipped on Saturday or Shanivar. It is believed that Hanuman devotees are not affected by the pranks of Shani and therefore many people worship Hanuman on Saturdays.
Visiting Navagraha shrines, Sani temples or temples of Lord Ganesha on the day is considered auspicious. Some people also observe a fast on the day and the method followed is the same as that of Shanivar Vrat.
Please note that today there are several fake astrologers who take undue advantage of the bad phase in a person’s life. They blame everything on Shani and conduct expensive pujas. Bad phases in materialistic life are natural and the right way to get out of it is by concentrating more on one’s Karma.
