In view of the ongoing onion crisis in the country, the Indian Railways is fully geared up to extend all necessary help in the transportation of onion from any location to any other part of the country as and when required to ensure sufficient availability of onion across the country. Chairman, Railway Board, Shri Vivek Sahai specially convened a meeting of traffic directorate of Railway Board here today on this issue and gave directions to make sufficient wagons and rakes available on priority basis for this purpose. Zonal Railways have accordingly been instructed to take necessary steps in this regard. Ministry of Railways will have close coordination with all concerned departments of Government of India to help ease the current onion crisis.
A special cell has been set up in Railway Board to monitor and supervise the movement of onion by rail. A senior official of Railway Board has been nominated to head the cell. Any additional measures required to help resolve the onion crisis would be taken by Railways as per the directives of the Government.
It may, however, be pointed out that as of now Railways do not have any indent for onion transportation pending with it.
