By Jagpreet Sandhu, Chandigarh, January 2 : The first time appearing counsillor Raj Bala Malik from Congress has been elected as the new mayor of Chandigarh City. There were three women in the race for the mayor’s post. Out of the 36 votes polled, Congress candidate Raj Bala Malik got 21 votes, Asha Jawal from BJP got 12 votes and Jannat Jahan-ul-Haq from BSP received 2 votes only . The ruling party congress also captured the two posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
The Mayor of the city Raj Bala Malik is a well qualified and socially active woman. She received her Masters & L.L.B degree from Kurukshetra University and later completed her P.G Diploma in Public Relations from Panjab University, Chandigarh.
After winning the M.C elections and being appointed as the Mayor of the city , Raj bala Malik said she is focused to work for the development of Chandigarh into a world-class city. The Mayor also said that her main agendas in the city are the illegal habitations, encroachments, parking space, sanitation and maintenance of cleanliness, maintenance of parks.
