Right from the beginning when the massive 2G scam erupted the BJP has been consistently taking the position that a scam of this magnitude would not have been possible without the knowledge of the high ups in the government. Once the entire dimension of this loot of public money unfolded, involving nearly 1.76lakh crores (as per the CAG finding) the BJP has openly alleged that this would not have been possible without the tacit approval and consent of the Finance Minister and Prime Minister. Various development and documents in this connection have also been appearing in media from time to time. The Congress party used to react very strongly though defensively whenever we pushed them to answer it. A BJP delegation consisting of members of Parliament and senior office bearers of the party had given a memorandum to the CBI demanding an investigation into the role of the then Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in this whole scam. Now, today Mr. A. Raja the Former Telecom Minister has himself disclosed and admitted in the court that indeed the Prime Minister and the then Finance Minister P. Chidambaram were in the know of all this and the entire transaction had their consent and approval. This position also articulated earlier has been now formally admitted in the court by Mr. Raja giving it the due sanctity of a court record. It needs to be recalled that the NDA Govt. in the year 2003 had taken a cabinet decision that Spectrum pricing must be determined by the Telecom Ministry in consultation and with the approval of Finance Ministry. This was obviously designed to ensure that the License and Spectrum price must be determined in a fair and objective manner.
It is now in public domain that much against the repeated advise of the officers of the Finance Ministry recommending for auction of 2G spectrum, Mr. Chidambaram after the grant of license on 10.1.2008; curiously took the position that the matter be treated as closed and the Prime Minister also confirmed the same position subsequently in his meeting with the Telecom Minister and the Finance Minister. Mr. Chidambaram took a curious and surprising position that future allocation of spectrum may be made through auction and that past be treated as closed. Information in this connection is very much in public domain.
There was substantial evidence that rule of the game in allocation of 2G license was changed after the game had begun. The PM kept quite. When some of the beneficiaries of these 2G licenses along with spectrum, sold a part of their equity to foreign investors for a considerable sum even then the Prime Minister or the Finance Minister did not take any corrective measure inspite of evidence to show that 2G licenses have been given at a throw away price to chosen few Mr. Chidambaram sought to camouflage by giving it the spin of infusion of foreign equity. All this was designed to cover up their own omission and commission and put a lid on the worst scandal of independent India. The Prime Minister both inside and outside the Parliament has been evasive on this issue. Now his own former colleague and coalition partner has named him in the Court.
The BJP therefore demands that both the Prime Minister and Finance Minister must resign forthwith as they have got no legal political and moral authority to remain in office.
