A serious matter related with ragging and use of humiliating casteist words against Scheduled Caste students has come in light in the RML National Law University, Lucknow. Rahul Kanaujia, Vikrant Singh, Akash Anand and Saurabh Kumar, all third year students had given a written complaint to the Hostel warden on 22 September 2012 that Anubhav Singh Bassi, Varun Singh and others have abused them through derogatory caste-related words.
On 22 September another third year student Gaurav Kumar was ragged in the canteen by a fourth year student Vishesh Dhatarwal. Gaurav complained about this matter to the University VC and Anti Ragging cell but no action was taken. Again on 23 September at about 7.30 PM, Akshay Rana, Vishesh Dhatarwal and Amit Rathi ragged Gaurav and beat him. He was ragged by being called Bihari and was jeered at for his accent. Gaurav complained to Balraj Chauhan, VC and J D Gangwar, Deputy Registrar but Gangwar rebuked him instead. Later Gaurav registered a FIR No 246/2012 under sections 323/506 IPC at Ashiana police station, Lucknow..
Yesterday I went to the University and found the incidents to be true after a detailed enquiry in this matter. Ragging and humiliation of Scheduled caste students in a prestigious institution is really very serious. I have written to the VC asking him to take very serious action in this matter and have also requested the DGP, UP to include section 5 of the UP Anti-Ragging Act 2010 in the investigation.
