In the PIL No 259 of 2013 filed by Social activist Nutan Thakur asking for installation of CCTVs in women lock-up and office area of all police stations in India, the Allahabad High Court, Lucknow Bench today directed the Home Secretary, Government of India and Principal Secretary Home, UP to file their response within 2 weeks. The Bench of Justice Uma Nath Singh and Justice V K Dixit also asked Thakur to file an affidavit about the proposed way of power back-up for using the CCTVs. The High Court has also asked the UP Government to respond about the clearing the female lock-ups in various police stations of UP and why they have been presently occupied by arms, ammunitions, case properties etc..
In the petition, Thakur has said that installation of CCTVs in office area of police stations will help enhance the service of the police stations and will increase the sense of security among women complainants and victims. Similarly, CCTV in women lock up will act as a deterrent for any criminal act being committed against arrested women.
