7 Dec : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has raised the compensation for families of those who have lost lives in the recent rains in the state from Rs one lakh to two lakh.
The decision was taken during a meeting with the collectors of 12 flood-hit districts at the secretariat in Chennai on Sunday.Karunanidhi said those who received Rs one lakh earlier as compensation would get an additional Rs one lakh.
He informed the meeting that a Central team would be coming later on Sunday evening to assess the extent of damage suffered by the state when cyclone Nisha battered most parts of Tamil Nadu.
Asking officials to personally hand over the solatium to the affected people, he instructed them to distribute the compensation before the stipulated date of 10th December.
The meeting also decided to distribute dhotis and sarees to rain affected families. It also decided to distribute uniforms and books free of cost to children in the flood-affected families.
