Tamil Nadu govt on Monday launched free bus pass scheme for the current academic year which is expected to benefit over 27 lakh school and government college students across the state.Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa launched the scheme for the 2011-12 academic year, which would be implemented at a cost of Rs 303.84 crore, a government release said on Monday.
She gave away passes to seven students from seven different schools in the city, the release said, adding the number of beneficiaries had increased from 26.3 lakh students to 27.2 lakh students this year.Jayalalithaa also presented a sum of Rs 1 lakh each to the relatives of three fishermen who went missing after they put out to sea on 17th May, it said.
