17 August :The CPI-M on Saturday has demanded the Centre to bring in a legislation to ensure reservation for dalits in all private educational institutions in the country.
"We demand the UPA government that they bring in reservation for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes in all private educational institutes in the country," CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat said during the state level Dalit convention in Kochi on Saturday.
Due to commercialisation of education, several institutions are going outside the purview of reservation, Karat said."It is unfortunate that the Supreme Court has exempted higher educational private institutions from implementing quota."
Karat said all oppressed sections should fight unitedly to change the society norm."It is necessary for us to ensure that there is a common united struggle of all the oppressed sections in the society to bring in a change in the societal structure."
CPI(M) will step up efforts to mobilise dalits to fight for their economic and social rights all over the country, he said adding, in Madurai, a 16-year-old wall built to prevent the lower class people going to the main areas was recently brought down.
Struggle for temple entry, for access to main roads are being conducted in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, he said.Courtsey DDINEWS
