Chandigarh , July 11, 2008:The nuclear deal between India and USA is purely an economic issue connected deeply with the social life of the Country. Its relevance and necessity can be properly gauged keeping in view the future projections of demand and supply of power in the Country.
Without going in to details and statistics an ordinary citizen of this country already stands convinced about the growing shortage of power and its impact on the country’s economy. Power shortage will certainly bring poverty, unemployment and sluggish growth of agriculture industry and trade. In this context there is no alternative to nuclear power because the conventional resources for the power generation are limited and can not go for a long time.
The left parties have unnecessarily damaged the interest of the country, in and out side, by politicizing this very important economic issue. Not only is the credibility of the country, but even of every Indian at stake in the international Irena. Moreover inside the Country, they have endangered the political stability and future growth of our economy.
The NDA is trying to take political mileage from this situation which is not only least patriotic but also a very big example of unscrupulous political opportunism.
PPCC appreciates the positive signals emanating from the section of the Akali Dal when indications were given that Akalis may support Dr. Manmohan Singh’s government on Indo-US nuclear deal because nuclear power is the need of the hour, particularly for Punjab, which is already reeling under long and unscheduled power cuts and the State Electricity Board has almost become bankrupt. PPCC hopes that the saner and the right thinking element in the Akali party will see reason and prevail upon by recognizing whatever is in the best interest of the State. It will be disastrous if they blindly and meekly submit to the dictates of the BJP and vote against the welfare and prosperity of the people of Punjab. It is necessary now to remind them that even on the floor of the Assembly the Akaly government through their finance minister has openly advocated for a nuclear power plant for Punjab. How can such a plant come in to existence without proper and sufficient nuclear fuel and technology?
Political affiliation should not be allowed to take precedence over the economic benefits of the people of the State and the country as a whole. Congress party understands and fully appreciates the political compulsions of the Akalis because there Government can not survive without BJP support, while doing so we expect the Akalis should rise above political consideration and show political acumen and statesmanship by convincing there BJP partners of the benefits Punjab is going to get from this deal.
