KAPURTHALA, JUNE 16:Defending champions Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Manipur qualified for the knockout stage from their respective boys pools in the 35th Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship here today.
Holders Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Kerala girls also advanced to the knockout stage from their respective pools.
In the boys pool D encounter Tamil Nadu outpointed Kerala by 38-32. The TN boys established a 26-9 points in the second quarter. In the third and fourth quarters Kerala with their second set of five players fought well and scored 23 points against 12 by Tamil Nadu. However that was not enough to extricate from the jaws of defeat. For Tamil Nadu Shiva (14), Gautam (4), Rajesh (8). For Kerala, Raju (10), Balu (9), Denny (6) and Sibin (4) were the main scorers.
In the girls pool ‘E’ match Punjab staged a fine rally to overcome Rajasthan by 47-24 points. Rajasthan gained a lead of one point (12-11) at the end of first quarter. Cheered by the home crowd, Punjab fought back through their substitutes in the second quarter as they not only wiped out the deficit, but also established a lead of nine points (27-18). In the third quarter, Punjab consolidated their lead by 16 points (36-20) and finally in the fourth quarter won by 47-34 points.
For Punjab Savita (11), Aman (12), Sukhnoor-5, Manpreet (6) and for Rajasthan, Ishita (11), Manisha (8) and Kumud (6) were the principal scorers.
It was Punjab’s second successive win as last night they had beaten West Bengal.
