May 22:Voting for the by-polls to three assembly constituencies in Haryana and one in Punjab began on a peaceful note amidst tight security this morning. Polling in Adampur, Indri and Gohana assembly constituencies in Haryana and Amritsar South in Punjab began at 8 am.
The stakes are high for former Haryana Chief Minister Mr. Bhajan Lal, Dharampal Malik and Rakesh Kamboj who are seeking re-election from Adampur, Gohana and Indri after being disqualified for breaking away from the Congress and joining the Haryana Janhit Congress floated by Mr. Bhajan Lal’s son, Kuldeep Bishnoi. The Amritsar South seat fell vacant due the death of Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Raminder Singh Bolaria.
Eighty-one candidates are in the fray in the three assembly constituencies of Haryana, four in Amritsar South.Mr. Bhajanlal has 40 opponents in Adampur constituency in Fatehabad district. His main contenders are former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal’s son Ranjit Singh of Congress, former Finance Minister Sampat Singh of INLD and Parbhat Singh of CPI-M.
Polling is in progress for the by-election of Amritsar South assembly constituency in Punjab. Around 25 percent voters had cast their votes when reports last came in. Courtsey : AIR
