CHANDIGARH, April 21: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today condemned the killing of a youth Gurkirat Singh Sekhon in Jallandhar by an Akali councillor, Prince Makkar, who happens to be the nephew of the Akali MLA from Adampur, Sarbjit Singh Makkar.
In a statement issued here today, Capt Amarinder Singh expressed shock as how the Akalis were taking law into their own hands without any fear of punishment. Demanding the immediate arrest of the accused, Capt Amarinder said that the police must not provide any concessions to him. He warned, those police officials trying to shield him will have to face the consequences themselves. The PCC President said, the Akalis were killing people with impunity as they seem to have been provided legal immunity by the government. He pointed out, earlier about a couple of months ago the Akali MLA from Banga, Mohan Lal killed his own cousin and personal assistant Jagdish Mehmi. Although the police booked him under section 302 of the IPC, he has not even been questioned not to speak of being taken into custody.
Capt Amarinder maintained that having abused the law with all impunity against the Congress workers all these years, the Akalis were not sparing their own people now just because they have started thinking they were above the law.
The PCC President said, although the Congress government will certainly bring all these people to the book, but at the same time the Akali-BJP government in the state cannot escape its responsibility to punish the guilty.
“It is shameful on part of this government that people are being killed by those who are supposed to protect them and yet they go scot free”, he regretted, while warning, this was a dangerous trend and can push Punjab to lawlessness and jungle raj.
