CHANDIGARH, July 18: The Congress today condemned youth Akali Dal president Bikram Majithia for breaking the maryada by making his visit to Harmandir Sahib as a show of strength. The party said, Majithia should have gone in a humble way and paid his obeisance respectfully at the Harmandir Sahib and not turned it into an occasion of pomp and show.
In a joint statement senior Congress leaders including PCC vice president Mr Laal Singh, general secretaries Rana Gurjit, Sukh Sarkaria and Lali Majithia asked Majithia whether he wanted to pay obeisance at the Harmandir Sahib or wanted to show his support to people of Punjab.
The Congress leaders hoped that the Akal Takht will take note of today’s happenings and take appropriate action against Majithia for breaking the maryada which makes it mandatory that a disciple should pay his obeisance at Harmandir Sahib with all humility and not with arrogance of power that was at display during Majithia’s visit. The Congress leaders said, people were subjected to a number of hardships and harassment as Majithia’s supporters blocked the roads everywhere. “It was too obvious that more than paying obeisance at Harmandir Sahib, Majithia wanted to stage manage crowds in different places to claim that he enjoyed lot of support”, the Congress leaders said, while adding, “no matter how desperately he tries to prove his credentials, everybody knows in Punjab as how he could become the president of the youth Akali Dal”.
