The India Post, Chandigarh, 28th February, 2009 : Shri Dip Chand Memorial National Moot Court Competition–2009 was inaugurated at the Moot Court hall of the Department of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Judge Punjab & Haryana High Court, was the chief guest. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Permod Kohli, Judge Punjab & Haryana High Court was the guest of honour. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Rakesh Kumar Garg, Judge Punjab & Haryana High Court, the Vice Chancellor Prof. R.C. Sobti, Padam Shree, were the other esteemed dignitaries who lit the lamp and graced the occasion with their presence.
In addition to this, many senior advocates, Syndics and Senators, Faculty members & students of various departments including the Department of Laws and UILS were also present in huge number. Prof. P.S. Jaswal in his welcome address mentioned it to be special day for the Department of Laws as such a mega event was being organized by the department for the first time. Prof. Shashi K. Sharma, Chief Coordinator of the function, while raising his aspiration from the younger generation remarked in his bold words that the present legal education system is more than the reading of books and that a new moot court culture would provide the sufficient thrust for the budding legal eagles. Further, he motivated the participants with the cash prizes of Rs. 10,000/- for first position, Rs. 7,000/- for the first runner up, Rs. 5,000/- for the best mooter and Rs. 3,000/- for the best memorial. In all 29 teams from various parts of the country have come to participate in this moot Court competition in which they will show their legal skill to argue in the Court.
Prof. R.C. Sobti, appreciated the role of the law department in creating legal awareness.Hon’ble Justice Permod Kohli explained the importance of legal profession in a globally competitive era and also appreciated the importance of moot Court competitions in the development in the legal intellect.
Hon’ble Justice J.S. Khehar, while being nostalgic of his student days traced the importance of law as a student, a teacher, and a professional and as a custodian of law. He further summed up his views on legal profession in economical terms as you don’t spend a penny and you get all the money. He finally thanked the organizers and wished the participants all the very best by declaring the national moot Court competition open according to Prof. P.S. Jaswal, Chairman, Dept. of Laws, P.U.
