A two day Seminar on “Strengthening Guidance and Counseling Services in School and College”, organized by the centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension, Panjab University and Guidance and Counseling Cell, Panjab University, Chandigarh, concluded here today. Around 100 students/teachers and counselors from various schools and colleges attended the seminar.
In an ongoing endeavor to relocate the main issues of Guidance and Counseling, within a Global perspective, a panel discussion, chaired by Lt. General B.S. Dhaliwal. (PVSM, AVSM, Fellow, Panjab University). Lt. General B.S. Dhaliwal shared many difficult moments from his illustrious career, while guiding and counseling many officers and subordinates working under him in army. He had lessons to give to the school and college teachers from his army experiences.
Dr (Mrs) Vipin Sobti, Principal, Govt. College, Derabassi, Chief Guest of the valedictory session, emphasized that counseling of the parents is as much necessary as the counseling of the children. Some times there are problem parents and not the problem children. The right diagnose is must for the effective treatment and it could not be done without the right perspective.
Professor Jatinder Mohan a renowned psychologist from Department of Psychology, Panjab University, Chandigarh said that counseling is a practice in which patience and ethics play a major role. He said it is Dharma of the Counselor not to be peddler but a person who requires reputation of being questionable and answerable.
Dr Kirandeep Singh from the Department of Education, P.U., cautioned the counselors against labeling children because labels can leave permanent scars on the minds of the children.
Dr Jasbir Kaur Chahal, from Govt. College of Education said that proper understanding of the adolescents is must, if not properly handled, any one can go astray.
Dr Tarundeep Kaur , a practicing counselor, Dr Rakesh Thakur, Dr Manjeet Brar from Govt. College, Sector 11 also spoke on the occasion.
