Nov 29 : The Centre has approved the launching of a new Doordarshan channel for the North-East to ensure better coverage of the region at the national level. This will be in addition to Doordarshan’s existing North East Channel 13.
The new channel will be ready for launching by March next year, said the Engineer-in-Chief of Doordarshan, Mr. D. Ray on Saturday, while inaugurating a meeting of the engineering heads of the Doordarshan Kendras (DDKs) of the North Eastern region at Guwahati, Assam. He said the Centre has sanctioned the requisite funds for upgradation and digitalization of the DDKs in the region during the Eleventh Plan period. Mr. Ray said the transmission network of Doordarshan will be further strengthened for quality telecast of programmes and ensuring more area coverage in remote localities of the region.
Mr. Ray expressed concern over the reported laxity of cable operators in presentation of Doordarshan channels to the customers of the region through their networks. He said the matter will be placed before the Prasar Bharati Board very soon, to evolve a strong monitoring mechanism in co-ordination with the State administrations.
