17 Oct :Joining the rest of the World, Mokokchung commemorated World Food Day 2008 under the theme ‘World Food Security: Challenges of climate change and bio energy’ on 16th October 2008 at Mokokchung. The main programme organized by Agricultural Technology and Management Agency (ATMA) Mokokchung was held at the office conference hall of DAO, Mokokchung with SDO (C) Mokokchung as the chief guest.
The chief guest stressed on the need to promote awareness for hungry and poor people and highlighted the plight of millions of undernourished people in the world. She also said that global warming and biofuel boom are now threatening to push the number of hungry even in the decades to come and the climate change will affect the suitability of land for different types of crops, the incidents of pests and diseases, bio-diversity and eco-systems. She called upon the people to adapt measures for more efficient managements.
Earlier in the programme Project Director SARS, N. Tekatoshi and ATMA gave the keynote address. The function ended with the taking of a pledge on World Food Day 2008 by all the participants and observance of two-minute silence for the hungry and poor people all over the world. To mark the occasion the participants collected a small amount of money for a one-day square meal for those hungry and poor people around the world and sent it to the FAO.
