16 Oct :A three day training programme on Disaster Management began on 15th September at DPDB conference hall, Phek for various groups under Phek district which will continue till 17th Oct. 2008.
Sr. Lecturer Vekrotsu Swuro presented the topic on ‘Gender issue in Disaster Management’. He stressed on the need to think big, start small and to act smart in order to succeed in any given situation in general and more so in Disaster Management. Disasters affect men and women differently as we are endowed with different capacity by nature. He drew the attention of the house to the weaknesses and strengths of women in very practical terms and said that policy level of disaster management for women, preparedness, response, and for recovery may be planned accordingly for mitigation and management of disaster. He added that efficiency and effectiveness of disaster management programme is undermined if women specific needs (vulnerabilities) and contributions (capacities) are overlooked in the design and planning of this programme.
Civil SDO, Phek, Chubawati Chang also gave power point presentation on the topic ‘Disaster Risk Management’ to the Town councilors in the evening session. In the earlier session the trainees were Government Officers, Town Councillors and representatives of NGOs.
