25 aUGUST : Kiyanilie Peseyie, Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly, visited landslide affected areas on the National Highway 39 and Kohima town on 23rd August 2008, accompanied by Zeneituo Yano, ADC Kohima, Dominic Yazokie, Deputy Director, IPR and area leaders.
The Speaker interacted with Engineers of BRO, Traffic Police officers and DBs at the NH-39 road slide below KMC dumping area, to assess the situation. The landslide was a result of the massive glacier like flow of slushy mud from the mountain above the road and reaching down to the river below. The NH 39 has curved in and is still sinking. A level cutting across the gap was not possible owing to the soft quagmire condition, according to the BRO. The BRO is otherwise confident they can fill up the road within a week if the weather improves. Presently, despite the unceasing filling up with boulders and earth the portion is just sinking everyday. All upward bound heavy vehicles have been stranded and has stretched to few kilometers.
The speaker had earlier on the day, visited the worst effected areas of his constituency in Kohima town. The basin common to New Market and Daklane had every year been sinking. The houses, drains, footpaths and roads have been cracked and distorted. The Speaker was urged for urgent measures by the Chairperson of the wards. They requested for construction of check dams, plantation of trees, construction of distribution drains and culverts. The Speaker has already initiated with by concerned Departments for necessary action.
