18 August : SHAMATORE : The 62nd Independence Day was celebrated at Shamatore with great enthusiasm and gaiety with Parliamentary Secretary for IPR and Economics and Statistics R. Tohanba as the Chief Guest.
The Chief Guest unfurled National tricolour and took salute from the parade contingents consisting of Nagaland Police, Village Guards and School students.
Delivering the Independence Day speech to a mammoth gathering of around 10,000 people, the Parliamentary Secretary paid tribute to the freedom fighters who through non-violence means brought about the independence of India. He further called on all Nagas to unite and pursue our goals without violence and bloodshed. He also highlighted the achievement of the State Government and called on the people for their cooperation to bring about peace and prosperity in the state.
Other highlights of the celebration were cultural songs and dances and exhibition of agriculture and other indigenous products.
Earlier on 14th evening, the Parliamentary Secretary convened an inter-departmental meeting where the various heads of offices and representatives highlighted their concerned problems and grievances. R. Tohanba noted the problem and suggestions highlighted and assured of his intervention to redress and mitigate the problems of the area. (Limawati & Longer)
MONYAKSHU HQ.: At Monyakshu, the Independence Day 2008 was celebrated with Extra Assistant Commissioner, T. Aiwang as the Chief Guest. The Chief Guest unfurled the National Flag and took the salute from Village Guard (VG) contingent. The National Anthem was sung by students of Baptist English School, Monyakshu town. More than Five hundred people from Monyakshu Sub-Division led by the Village Council Members and GBs attended the celebration. (DPRO, Mon)
AKULUTO: Independence Day was observed at Akuluto with the rest of the country by hoisting the national flag in all the government offices and institutions at 6 a.m. There after a function was held in the office premises of SDO (C) Akuluto which was attended by officers and staff of various government offices, GBs/DBs and public numbering about 200 persons followed by a light refreshment. SDO (C) Akuluto also attended a small programme with the 27th Assam Rifle Coy based at Akuluto. (DIPR)
KIPHIRE: The 62nd Independence Day was celebrated at Kiphire with the Parliamentary Secretary for Industries and Commerce Dr. K.C. Nihoshe as the chief guest.
The parade consisting of 9 school and police contingents was commanded by Assistant Commandant, 3 NAP Matsungshilu, NPS.
Other highlights of the function were cultural dance by women of Kiphire village, exhibition football match between Medical Ward and Bazar Ward and presentation of District Awards by the chief guest to the following:

ABOI: The 61st anniversary of the Independence Day was observed at Aboi with Parliamentary Secretary for Irrigation & Flood Control, Geology & Mining, Y. Patton as the chief guest.
Highlights of the day’s celebration were speech by the chief guest, march past, drill display by St. John school students, cultural dances by Langmeang union, Aboi and women of KNSK Aboi. (SDIO, Aboi)
TIZIT: The 62nd India Independence Day was celebrated in Tizit at the local football ground on 15th August 2008 with Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Development & REPA, Pangnyu Phom as the chief guest.
The chief guest unfurled the Tri-colour national flag and inspected the parade contingents which was participated by 6th NAP Tizit, Village Guards, Government High School, NCC Chapuka, students from M. John School, David School, St. Francis School, Unit School Tizit, Valley School and Baptist School.
Marking the occasion traditional folk dances and a football exhibition match was played between Mankhao Hill Club and Tizitian. (SDIO, Tizit)
TOBU: With the rest of the country, the 61st anniversary of Independence Day celebration was observed at Tobu Hq. with ADC Tobu, S.N. Tsanglao as the chief guest. The chief guest unfurled the national flag and took salute from the contingents. Other highlights of the programme included cultural song by KNSK, dance by the Newman School, special songs by GPS, TTBY, Bujeng School and drama by the TTSU. An exhibition football match was played between ADC XI and Adhoc Town Committee XI which the Adhoc Town Committee XI won. (IA, Tobu)
THONOKNYU: Independence Day celebration was observed at Thonoknyu on 15th August at the Head DB, Pheniang’s resident. The Head DB unfurled the national flag at 6:00 AM where all the heads of offices, staff, DBs and GBs attended the celebration. (IA, Thonoknyu)
NOKLAK: Independence Day celebration was observed at Noklak ADC Hq with Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, S. Heno. Chairman DPDB Tuensang unfurled the National Flag at 9.00 AM and took salute from the eleven contingents. Other highlights of the programme included drill display by the Women Group/VGs and Red Cross Noklak branch visited patients at Noklak Civil Hospital. In the evening programme, football final match of the 4th Autumn Football Tournament was played. (SDIO, Noklak)
NAGINIMORA: Parliamentary Secretary for Prison, Home Guards, Fire & Emergency Service, Wochumo Kithan graced the 62nd Independence Day Celebration at Naginimora as the chief guest. He unfurled the Tri colour and took the salute from the parade contingents.
Speech from the Chief Guest and Cultural items were the highlights of the function which was attended by around 2,000 people.
