Nagaland,30 June: ‘The Olympic Day Run is to promote Olympic movement and its ideals. It is also to day to convey the message of peace, unity and brotherhood amongst the people of the district and Nagaland in particular’, stated MLA Noklutoshi, Chairman DPDB and NIDC Nagaland Hotels Corporation Ltd. speaking as the guest of honour during at the Olympic Day Run, sponsored by Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) and organized by Mokokchung District Sports Council (MDSC) at Mokokchung on 30th June 2008.
Addressing the gathering the Chairman stated that in today’s scenario, sports is not only a recreation activity but a full fledged profession and it broadens our horizon of understanding people and manners, our outlooks towards life and the society. He said that the Olympics enables people to play the game of life in proper spirit without giving way to animosity and malice. The Chairman also mentioned that today our youth are falling prey to the hazardous drug addiction, struggling in darkness in search of something that is ‘adventurous and thrilling. He said that it will be better if our youths channelize their colossal strength and talents into game and sports. It will cultivate the spirit of self help, confidence and endurance, he added.
The function was held at the main police point wherein the Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung & President MDSC, Bendangkokba read out the Olympic Day Run message received from the President, International Olympic Committee. The Olympic Spirit Flame lap of honour was performed by Mokokchung District Sports Council affiliates and lighting of Olympic Spirit Fire followed by Olympic Day Run flagged of by Guest of Honour.
Over 200 youths from 15 wards of the town participated in the Olympic Day Run programme. Martial Arts display was performed by Mokokchung Taek-won-do Association and Tug- of- War between Watsu and Mokokchung town GBs were the other highlights of the day’s programme. The function was chaired by B.B. Gurung, Vice President, Mokokchung District Sport Council.
