Mumbai’s environment is getting worse day by day and the Ministry for Environment is not paying attention. The reason behind it is the nexus between BMC, Builders, Building Societies and shopkeepers. Builders, Building Societies and shopkeepers want to show good view to the customers and earn money. Trees become a hindrance as they block the view. They get together with BMC and inject the trees leading to its drying and then it’s burnt.
“This Diwali, in Malad (West), near the Meet chowki junction of the Link road going to Goregaon, at the other side of the road, atleast 10 trees were burnt and cut. It happened so fast that common people did not even come to know of it. Only stem is left, which has been covered by stone and mud. Small saplings have been planted nearby to show the procedure. A dozen trees have been burnt in similar fashion on Chandravarkar road, Borivali,” alleges Manmohan Gupta of Malad West based NGO Gandhi Vichar Manch.
“Modi Gov’t should investigate i and Environment Ministry should punish the culprits. Now, only buildings are left and slowly gardens and open spaces are disappearing. Not just Mumbai, entire country will face environmental degradation in future. I urge Modi Govt to investigate it,” he adds.
