1 May : Maharashtra Day is being celebrated across the state on Friday. The state of Maharashtra was carved out of the erstwhile state of Saurashtra 49 years ago on linguistic basis. Governor of Maharashtra Mr. S. C. Jamir unfurled the flag at the Shivaji Park grounds in Mumbai on Friday.
It was followed by a ceremonial parade. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Jamir reviewed the progress made by the state in social and economic areas in the previous years. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, his cabinet colleagues and Mayor Shubha Raul along with dignitaries were present on the occasion. Later at Hutatma Chowk, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan paid homage to 106 martyrs who laid down their lives for the cause of a unified Maharashtra with Mumbai as its capital. The flag hoisting ceremony was observed across the state with great enthusiasm but in a simple manner due to the model code of conduct in force.
Gujarat is also celebrating its 50th foundation day on Friday. The Governor Mr. Naval Kishor Sharma and Chief Minister Mr. Narendra Modi have wished the people of the state on this occasion. In his message, the Governor Mr. Sharma has said that Gujarat is marching on the development path with full determination of the people.
